Hilal Sami Hilal (Vitória ES 1952) is a multimedia artist. He studied arts at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (Ufes) and engraving, in Minas Gerais, at the Ouro Preto Winter Festivals of 1973 and 1974. In 1977, a year after graduating, he began teaching at the university and researching handmade paper. The work of Hilal Sami Hilal presents a great variety of materials and meanings. Hilal began painting watercolors, but soon began to make his own paper with cotton made old clothes of friends and family. The papers are thick and have layers, suggesting an archeology, but present themselves as paintings, due to their color and depth. Its layout resembles Arabic calligraphy and architecture, which refer to its family origin. He draws letters, numbers and people’s names on checkers and uses acid to corrode the blank parts. By superimposing these layers, the artist creates concavities, emphasizing the empty spaces.
